Academic Intervention
FAQ's
Q. Who are good candidates for AI ?
A. Generally speaking, those students that have responded positively to AI are capable of doing the work ...but are not submitting it. In addition, students who work slowly and need additional time to complete assignments have been successful. Students who exhibit attendance or behaviour concerns are not AI candidates. They should be referred to administration through the Behavior referral form. Students who have learning difficulties should be referred to School Based Team or Charlotte Ogasawara.
Q. Does a student have to be failing to be referred to AI ?
A. No. In fact, I strongly encourage you to refer students before they are failing.
Q. A student in my class is not submitting their work……what should I do?
A. Early action and intervention is key to solving the issue.
STEP 1 – Talk with the student as soon as the problem is identified. Let him/her know exactly what needs to be done and when you expect it by. Let them know that a referral is being considered.
Contact the parent and let them know that work is not being completed. Tell them that if it is not
completed by xxxxxx date, an AI referral will be made. Parental support of the AI program to
date has been exceptional.
STEP 2- Assign DT’s at lunch (through admin), utilize Saturday school and keep students in during tutorial time to help remedy the problem if necessary.
STEP 3 – If this does not have the desired effect, complete an AI Referral
Q. When should referrals be submitted?
A. Referrals should be submitted whenever there is a call for “at risk” lists to Morris Varadbasso (Feb. 27th, April 3rd, May 1st and May 29th ). Referrals can also be made any time in between if there is room in the AI class.
Q. Does a referral form need to be submitted for a student to go into AI?
A. Yes. Last semester I accepted lists of names, but I can no longer do this. The info contained on the Referral Form is valuable in determining what assistance is required for the student. An online version of the form is available at www.sd22.bc.ca/vss/docs/srf.pdf . All of the info can be typed in, but the form must be printed off and put in my box. In addition, a current report spreadsheet must be attached to all referral forms.
Q. What criteria is used to determine which students are accepted into AI ?
A. School Based Team reviews the AI application with the following three questions in mind;
1. Is there enough work for the student to do in AI ?
2. Has previous action been taken (discussion with student/parent, use of tutorial time, detentions, Saturday school etc…) ?
3. Are there other issues that need to be addressed before the student is accepted into AI (ie: attendance, behaviour, emotional issues, learning needs) ?
Q. What happens when one of my students is accepted into AI program ?
A. I will provide you with a list of students who are accepted into the AI program soon after SBT makes a decision. After I meet with the student and contact their parents, the student will begin AI.
Q. What happens if one of my students is not accepted in to the AI program ?
A. Students who are not accepted into the AI program will be assigned a case manager. The case manager will work with the teacher to help remedy the problem. Case Managers include; administration, counsellor, behavior support teacher, learning assistance teacher, ESL teacher.
Q. What is the teacher’s role once a student is accepted into AI ?
A. The teacher has two primary roles once a student is accepted into AI.
1. Provide the AI teacher with the work a student is to complete. Work can be given directly to the AI teacher – or passed to me.
2. Complete a student review when the student nearing the end of their AI sessions.
Q. How long are AI sessions ?
A. When a student is accepted into the AI program, they will be expected to complete a minimum of 6 days of AI (3 weeks – 2x per week). AI classes are 1 ½ hours long after school.
Q. What happens when my student has completed their AI sessions ?
A. Just prior to their last day of AI, I will put an AI student review sheet in your box. It will have 3 possible recommendations for you to make:
1st = 3 more weeks of AI are required (student still has a lot of work to do)
2nd = 1 more week of AI and review again (student has a bit of work left to do)
3rd = No more AI required (student has completed all assignments)
Q. What if a student was in AI earlier in the semester, and I would like him/her back in ?
A. Students who you have referred previously, and have since been released from AI, do not require another referral form. See me if they have reverted back to their “old ways” and I will sign them up for more sessions immediately.
Q. Can I put a student in AI for one or two days only ?
A. No. AI is intended for those students that require long term support (3 weeks minimum). For those students who require less time, Saturday school and detentions should be used instead.
Q. Can I pull a referral once it is submitted ?
A. Yes. Some teachers have used an AI referral as a tool to motivate students to complete their work. Submit a referral and tell students that if they get their work done by xxxxx date, the referral will be pulled. However, once a student is accepted into the AI program, it is expected that they will remain for the full 3 weeks and enough work can be provided.
Q. What if students are not going to their AI sessions ?
A. When students miss one session of AI, I will follow-up with them. Any missed sessions after that, students will be referred to Administration.
